Kang Seongjin discusses his Puskás Award nomination, returning from injury and playing with Ki Sungyueng.

The Korea Republic winger became the first player in FC Seoul’s history to join the club on a semi-professional basis as a high school player, and went on to make his K League debut two years ago, aged just 17 years, 11 months and 12 days. He quickly accumulated playing time after gaining the trust of coach An Iksoo during his debut season, when he made waves with his dashing runs and intricate dribbling.

Kang then made global headlines at the 2023 AFC U-20 Asian Cup with a stunning goal against Jordan. The wide player started his run inside his own half near the right touchline, before weaving past three challenges as he surged forward. A series of step-overs then unbalanced another defender and allowed him to get off a powerful left-foot strike from just outside the box – a shot so fierce it rendered the Jordanian goalkeeper motionless on its way into the top-left corner. A strike worthy of winning any game gained further recognition, and has been nominated for the 2023 FIFA Puskás award.
