Having already met in the group stage where Australia won 2-1, Korea Republic’s Park Youn-jeong is wary of the threat the Young Matildas pose but is hopeful the East Asian side will be able to impose their style of play on the game.
“We have already played against Australia in the group stage and we will go in with the same mindset – looking to get a good result,” said head coach Youn-jeong.
“Actually in the first game, we couldn’t play our style because of the conditions. We know Australia’s team strength is speed and physicality, so we have to prepare for that.”
Forward Park Soo-jeong is also keen to make up for their group stage defeat, saying motivation is high in the team to wrap their campaign up with a win.
“We faced Australia not in good conditions but we gave our all. Again, we face them and I’m confident we can do well,” said Soo-jeong.
“We will put that memory (semi-final defeat to DPR Korea) aside and try to achieve third place in the tournament. All the players are motivated to do well.”
Similarly, Australia head coach Leah Blayney is relishing the opportunity of playing Korea Republic again with the prospect of a different approach to the one they took in their opening game.
“Team Australia are looking forward to the match. Another opportunity for us to come up against a powerhouse in Asian women’s football,” said Blayney.
“We’re playing in different conditions, so obviously the game plan will be different. We’re aware what their strengths are and looking to nullify that. We want to put in a good performance.”
The 5-1 semi-final defeat to Japan ended Australia’s winning streak at three games but Chloe Lincoln said the players have put the loss to one side and will be ready for one last challenge.
“We’ve turned a page now, our focus is fully on Korea. We’re fully ready mentally to take on Korea,” said Lincoln. “Ride the high and the lows, switch on and off. The group has done well and we’re looking to end on a high.”
