Yapp Hung Fai wants Hong Kong, China to make a positive impact in the AFC Asian Cup Qatar™ 2023, starting with their Group C opener against United Arab Emirates at the Khalifa International Stadium on Sunday.

Khalid Eisa, meanwhile, will have to play a leadership role with the majority of the United Arab Emirates’ players making their tournament debut.
Yapp, who started his international career with the Hong Kong’s U23 team in 2009, wants his team to seize the opportunity of playing continental football.

“I’m thrilled with our return to the AFC Asian Cup (after more than 50 years). Our primary goal is to give our best, enjoy the experience, and aim for a strong performance,” said the 33-year-old Yapp, who plays for Hong Kong Premier League club Eastern.
“The UAE boast skillful and speedy players, a trait shared by many teams in the competition. Our focus is on staying true to our playing style, emphasising how well we can execute our strengths.

“Having been with Hong Kong for 14 years, I’m particularly excited about this competition. I hope Hong Kong can qualify for the next Asian Cup, which would be a significant development for our players.

“Our one-month preparation, including a training camp in Abu Dhabi, has set the team up to showcase our capabilities in the tournament. We are well-prepared and looking forward to a successful and memorable tournament.”

Eisa, set for a third AFC Asian Cup appearance, is determined to inspire the new generation.

“The first game is crucial for us, as emphasised by the coach. With almost 90 percent of new players, it is important that we follow the coach’s instructions, particularly in addressing weaknesses and capitalising on our strengths,” said the 34-year-old Eisa. “A positive performance in the first game will provide us with the much needed momentum.”

The Al Ain shot stopper believes that the harmony within the team is a key ingredient to having a successful tournament.

“Our team possesses the capability to go far and with determination, we aim to implement the coach’s instructions for a successful tournament. Despite significant changes in the squad with the addition of fresh faces, trust and confidence are vital elements.

“I don’t see much difference between the senior players and the new additions and this unity is one of the strengths of the UAE players that I hope will lead us to success on the pitch.”
