World Cup winner Vilda departs role after eight years in charge.
The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has announced the departure of Jorge Vilda as women’s national team coach and sports director.
Vilda led the team to the FIFA Women’s World Cup™ title at Australia & New Zealand 2023. Montse Tome (pictured below), who was Vilda’s assistant coach, has been confirmed as his successor. The former Barcelona and Spain midfielder has been part of the national team’s coaching staff since 2018.

The RFEF paid tribute to Vilda for being “a key piece in the notable growth of women’s football in Spain”.
“When, in 2015, he took over [as Spain coach] the national team was far from the elite, and currently occupies second position in the FIFA ranking,” the federation’s statement added.
“The RFEF appreciates his work at the head of the national team and in his functions as the head of sports for the women’s teams, as well as the successes achieved during his time crowned with the recent achievement of the World Cup. The RFEF would like to express its gratitude to Jorge Vilda for the services provided, for his professionalism and dedication during all these years, wishing him the best successes in the future.”
