Japan, however, suffered a 3-1 defeat to Belarus in Group C action.
Mexico 2-5 Oman
Needing three points after their defeat to Brazil, Oman eventually shrugged off the nagging attentions of a Mexico side which refused to give up to win their first match at UAE 2024 Dubai.
Despite falling behind inside 17 seconds to a Yahya Al Muraiki strike, Mexico turned the game around and took the lead through a superb Diego Martinez volley.
The Omanis recovered, though, to score four unanswered goals through Yaqdhan Al Hindasi, Mandhar Al Araimi, Al Muraiki and Khalid Al Oraimi to earn three valuable points.
Oman play Portugal on Tuesday where a win should take them into the knockout stage for the first time.
Japan 1-3 Belarus
Goalkeeper Mikhail Avgustov proved to be a stumbling block to Japan in their 3-1 defeat to Belarus in Group C.
The goalkeeper saved a penalty, made another breathtaking save and scored as Japan, the 2021 runners-up, suffered a setback after having opened their campaign with a 3-2 win over Colombia on Friday.
An Ivan Kanstantsinau own-goal put Japan ahead, but Ihar Bryshtsel equalised with a brilliant bicycle kick. Takuya Akaguma then craftily won a penalty, only for Avgustov to repel it.
The Belarus goalkeeper then slammed home a sumptuous volley to put the Europeans in front. Then, when Yusuke Kuwai spilled Avgustov’s shot, Artsemi Drozd was on hand to stab it home.
Japan have to defeat Senegal on Tuesday to stand a chance of advancing to the knockout stage.
