Serhou Guirassy’s star is rising for both Borussia Dortmund and Guinea.
When he joined FC Cologne in 2016, he found the German league to be the perfect environment in which to cultivate his talents. Following eye-catching spells with Amiens and Rennes in France, his return to Germany with VfB Stuttgart saw him cement his reputation as a formidable forward, scoring 44 goals in 59 matches for Die Roten.
His quick and direct style of play is perfectly suited to the Bundesliga, a league where he has made his mark. Having recently joined 2024 UEFA Champions League finalists Borussia Dortmund, he is on the hunt for trophies, with the FIFA Club World Cup 2025™ and an appearance at the FIFA World Cup 26™ firmly in his sights.
A perfect match for the Bundesliga
It came as no surprise to see Guirassy (who is 1.87m tall and weighs 82kg) adapt so well to a league that often favours powerful forwards who are capable of turning a game in the blink of an eye. His skills have proved to be well-suited to the style of play that he has encountered with both Stuttgart and Dortmund.
Guirassy’s coach at Dortmund, Nuri Sahin, is well aware of his contribution to the team, saying: “He adds another dimension to our game. He is a traditional striker who knows how to track back and create space for his team-mates.”
During his final season with Stuttgart, Guirassy notched 30 goals in 30 matches and helped the team finish as league runners-up, behind only Bayer Leverkusen. A quarter-finalist with Guinea in the 2023 CAF Africa Cup of Nations, Guirassy has maintained the same level of intensity since the start of the 2024/25 season with Dortmund, having scored almost a goal per game so far.
A successful scoring streak in Europe
Guirassy has also quickly become one to watch in the UEFA Champions League. He bagged his first brace in the second match of the league phase, helping brush Celtic aside in a 7-1 win. His team-mate Emre Can underlined Guirassy’s importance: “Serhou is a key player for us and he’s a top striker. He’ll go on to score many more goals for our team.”
In a rematch of the recent UEFA Champions League final between Dortmund and Real Madrid, Guirassy played a pivotal role by laying on an assist for his team’s second goal, scored by Donyell Malen, although Dortmund went on to lose 5-2.
A historic hat-trick for Guinea
Guirassy is also replicating his club form and shining on the international stage with Guinea. During the October international window, he bagged a memorable hat-trick against Ethiopia during the qualifiers for the CAF Africa Cup of Nations, firing the Syli National to a 4‑۱ win.
“I’m proud to help the team,” he said, following that match. “Every goal I score is for my country. I want to help Guinea meet their targets.”
With French tactician Michel Dussuyer now at the helm, Guirassy wants to lead the team to their greatest achievement to date: a first appearance at the FIFA World Cup. “It’s a childhood dream and something I discuss from time to time with other members of the squad. More than a dream, it’s our aspiration to be there. We won’t be holding anything back in qualifying and will do everything we can to get there,” Guirassy told FIFA in an exclusive interview in November 2023. Guinea are currently sitting in fourth place in Group G, three points behind section leaders Mozambique and Algeria.
FIFA Club World Cup 2025 in his sights
If Guirassy keeps up this momentum, Borussia Dortmund’s qualification for the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 could represent yet another key moment in his career. The tournament, which brings together the top clubs from every continent, will offer the deadly finisher another chance to shine on club football’s biggest international stage. “It’s a dream come true to play for a club like Dortmund. I want to make my mark here and help the club win trophies,” he said.
